War veterans in Gisborne, central Victoria, say the destruction of their clubroom in a fire will not hinder Anzac Day activities, as residents come to terms with losing the popular meeting space.

The fire broke out at the Gisborne Golf Club, in the Macedon Ranges, on Wednesday morning.

Firefighters took two hours to bring it under control before fire investigators and detectives from the Macedon Ranges Criminal Investigation Unit moved in to look for a cause.

Katrina Buttigieg, a mother of three boys who take lessons at the golf course, told the ABC the venue was a huge part of her family's life.

She said they would enjoy dinner, celebrate birthdays, meet friends and play golf there.

"I spoke to my kids this morning and my eldest has been having lessons here for a while, and I think he was very shocked and upset," she said.

"It really hits hard in your local community and it's a place you're so familiar with."

The golf course will reopen Thursday and the RSL sub-branch said it would continue to meet.

Clubhouse contained RSL history library

Sub-branch president Darren Grevis-James said members were moving ahead with plans for Anzac Day on April 25, despite losing a library of Australian military history including irreplaceable items.

"In some respects it's a tragedy but we'll both overcome it very, very quickly," he said.

"We've already got a lot of veterans out there that are selling Anzac Day appeal badges around Gisborne and throughout the district.

"We will continue with our planning for Anzac Day. It's going to happen at the Gisborne cenotaph. Things will keep going forward."

Darren Eenjes delivers details of the devastating fire.(ABC Central Victoria: Tyrone Dalton)

Macedon Ranges CFA Commander Darren Eenjes said the cause of the fire would be known in the coming days.

"At the moment, the fire is undetermined in the cause or the nature," he said.

"The cause of the fire might take a number of days and even further than that to come up with the original cause."

CFA Lieutenant Jordan Whitefield from the Gisborne Fire Brigade said around 20 fire trucks fought the blaze, which was "moving quite hard".

"The building is completely destroyed and that's a big loss to the community," he said.
