The Magpies scored a 9.6 (60) to 7.11 (53) win over the Demons in the first week of finals before Melbourne crashed out in straight sets with another loss against Carlton.

Speaking at the Demons presentation night where he finished fifth in the best and fairest count, May declared his side are "a better team" than Collingwood and spoke of his devastation at seeing the Magpies lift the premiership trophy.

"I've had a few fans come up to me and (say) 'I really appreciate and respect how much you hate losing', which is awesome, and I do," he said.

"And I don't want to talk about them in hindsight. But you know, we lose to Collingwood, and they go on to win the flag, and it f---ing hurts. Because we're a better team than them, we should have smoked them.

"And to sit there on grand ginal day and watch them hoist the cup, and get the medals, I'm sitting there going 'geez, our team's so much better than these guys'. We should've been out there, but we weren't.

"We've got an unbelievable list, an unbelievable coaching group, and the hunger has never been hungrier. I'm blessed to be apart of this team and looking forward to next year."

Melbourne's defeat to Collingwood came as a surprise with the Demons finishing with 69 inside 50s compared to the Magpies' 37.

Collingwood also lost the contested possession count by 24 at quarter time but won in a nail-biter and went on to defeat Brisbane in the grand final.
