'Succession' Wins Best Drama Series at the Golden Globes
“Succession‘s” award season run continues for the final season!
The HBO show picked up the Golden Globe on Sunday for Best Drama series.
“Succession” has previously won five Golden Globes, winning the Best Drama category in 2020 and 2022, with Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, and Sarah Snook also previously honored by this awards body for their performances on the show.
In addition to Best Drama Series, in 2024, “Succession” was also nominated for Best Actor (Cox, Strong and Kieran Culkin) Best Actress (Snook), Best Supporting Actor (Matthew Macfadyen, Alan Ruck, Alexander Skarsgård) and Best Supporting Actress (J. Smith-Cameron). Culkin, Macfadyen, and Snook won earlier in the evening.
The show, about a billionaire media tycoon family and their generational exploits to choose a successor, was a buzzy hit for HBO during all four seasons of its run.
IndieWire previously named the final season among the best shows and performances of the year, with IndieWire critic Ben Travers writing, “[F]or the millions wrapped up in the most moneyed and muddied of family financial drama, “Succession” has long felt like the end all, be all of TV. The heinous zingers shouted every Sunday night become Monday morning’s viral memes. The abject devastation suffered onscreen fuels heated conversations over who’s to blame, who’s deserving, and why. Few programs can pivot from the peak of comedy to the pit of gravitas like “Succession,” let alone overwhelm the audience with the simultaneous precision and depth given to each element.”
Finishing on a strong note, the finale was embraced by fans and critics — but creator Jesse Armstrong struggled with when and where to end it.
“Once season three was complete and aired, in December 2021, I got my fellow executive-producer–writers together […] to look at the alternative future-season shapes I’d written up on the walls: one final season of 10 episodes, or two of six or eight episodes,” creator Jesse Armstrong wrote in upcoming book “‘Succession’: Season Four: The Complete Scripts”. “My sense was that we should do one last full-fat season rather than stretch it out. But I was wary of saying goodbye too fast to all the relationships and opportunities, of leaving creative money on the table, regretting all the subplots that would go unwritten, the jokes left untold.”
