Sam Mac shares behind-the-scenes video of new Sunrise host Matt ...

Sunrise weather presenter Sam Mac has given a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the glitz-and-glamour treatment Matt Shirvington can expect now that he’s been announced as David Koch’s replacement as co-host on the show.

On Monday it was confirmed that the former Olympic sprinting great would join Nat Barr as co-host in the wake of Kochie’s announcement that he was stepping down after 21 years in the hot seat.

Well wishes and congratulations began pouring in for “Shirvo” on social media, including from Nat Barr, who described him as an “all-round great guy”.

Then there was Sam Mac, who celebrated the news by sharing a backstage video of Shirvo having his makeup applied for a photo shoot.

In the video, Shirvo is in the makeup seat getting the finishing touches on his “look” from the makeup artist.

Sam Mac hovers in the background, noting that Shirvo has just made his first Instagram post in ages (September 9 last year, to be precise).

“The man of the hour, Matthew ‘Shirvo’ Shirvington,” Sam says.

“Congratulations, mate.”

“Just getting my face on mate, you know ... this is NOT what it looks like at two in the morning,” Shirvo responded.

“This is the kind of behind-the-scenes content we’re here for,” Sam continued.

“Your triumphant return to Instagram today?”

“Yeah, first post in about 17 years,” Shirvo joked.

“First post since Kochie started Sunrise!”

“I’m gonna help you out with some followers,” Sam said, captioning the video: “Please help #ShirvoTo10k ... Always doing my bit for charitable causes.”

The ploy worked - as of Monday afternoon, Shirvo’s Instagram following was sitting at 10,600 followers.

In a separate photo of the pair of them, Sam wrote: “Just a coupla lads wearing too much makeup for a photo shoot.”

“No biggie,” he added.

“Welcome to the team, mate.

“Let’s have some fun.”

Shirvo has been a fill-in co-host for Sunrise for three years, so he knows a thing or two about early mornings and backstage larks.

“I’m so excited but also humbled by the opportunity to co-host such an important show to so many Australians,” he said in a statement about his appointment on Monday.

“It’s a privilege to follow on from Kochie.

“He leaves behind a legacy of honesty, humility and a whole lot of fun, and I can’t wait to continue adding to that.”

He said the full-time gig was a “huge life shift” that he couldn’t have taken on without the support of his wife Jess and their kids.

“To my new on-air family, particularly Nat, thanks for making me feel so welcome right from the start.

“Brekky Central, my new home. I like the sound of that!”

Kochie’s final day on Sunrise is Friday June 9, with Matt Shirvington taking over the role on June 12.
